What is tempering?
Tempering is in essence, "re-rolling" (for a random stated equipment piece) or randomly changing (within a range) the stats on an equip that has set (non-random) stats. If your equip is untempered, there is usually an equal amount of stat available both up -AND- down. (For ex: If your sword has 500AP, by tempering you can "reroll" the stat somewhere between 400 and 600.)
You cannot break an equip by tempering it.
How To Temper
Obtaining Chaos's Feathers
Chaos's Feathers can be obtained through party quests and Card Identification. There is a table that shows where to get each kind of 
Chaos's Feather at the bottom of the page. BEWARE, some Chaos's Feathers are super rare and hard to get, you should think carefully if you want to temper those equips!
When tempering goes wrong...
Tempering can be a convenient way to increase the statistics of equipment, but it is not always successful. For example, if you have a Level 50 Ultimate Steel Helm with 200 AP, you could temper it and it would get the minimum AP of 100. On the other hand, you could get an AWESOME temper such as 300 AP! Rule of thumb, is try not to aim for MAX stat, because it's quite hard and will be expensive. If you get a good temper, it may be best to leave it that way!
How to increase the chance of higher compound values?
Unlike mature compounding + refining, there is nothing (known) you can do in order to increase your chance of a good temper. purely real Luck (not in-game Luck)!
More about Tempering
- You can't temper absolute uniques
- You can't temper boss sets
- You can't temper some phantom equipment (such as Lv.275 Phantom Khanjar)
- You can't temper some requiem equipment (such as Lv.215 Requiem Stick)
